While it's a relatively simple matter to measure the length and width of an area to be covered,
the material you will need is likely to be a larger quantity for several reasons.
When measuring for carpet keep in mind that it comes on a roll that's usually 12 feet wide
and it must be purchased in that width. Some carpets, most often berbers, are available in
15 foot widths and many sheet vinyls are available in 6 foot widths, which may reduce
waste.
Ceramic tile and wood both should have approximately 10% added to your quantities for normal waste factors. Then
"round it off" to the nearest full box quantity. And don't forget to get good measurements for any transitions
such as from the tile or wood to sheet vinyl or carpet.
While the metal moldings we are
frequently accustomed to are relatively inexpensive and easy to find, wood transistion pieces
often must be custom ordered to match your new wood floor.
